Mikey Williams, star high school guard who is committed to Memphis, was arrested on April 13, 2023 in San Diego, CA, on suspicion of five felony counts of assault with a firearm. San Diego Sheriff's Department Lt. Matt Carpenter matched the man they arrested to the 6 foot 3, 19-year-old to Williams.

Williams was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail before 3:30 PM on April 13, according to NBC San Diego. ESPN states that Williams "paid a $50,000 bond and was released at 12:14 a.m. on Friday. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday."

Lt. Gavin Lanning believes Williams will face one charge. ESPN explains, "Williams is accused of violating California penal code Chapter 9, a (2), which involves "any person who commits an assault upon the person of another with a firearm." The charge carries a maximum sentence of up to four years in prison."

Williams is currently a viral sensation within the basketball world, a 4-star recruit currently ranked 34th in ESPN's Top 100 list for the Class of 2023. Williams played his freshman and senior year at San Ysidro High School in San Diego, and sits at 3.8 million followers on Instagram as well as more than 2 million on TikTok. He became the first high school basketball player "to sign a sneaker deal with a global footwear company when he signed a multi-year endorsement deal with Puma," in October 2021, as reported by ESPN.

The University of Memphis have stated, "We are aware of the situation and are gathering more information."
