On July 25, 2023, Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown signed a 5-year, $304 million supermax extension, The Athletic's Shams Charania reports via Twitter. Details of the contract include that the money is fully guaranteed, a trade kicker is included, and no player option is available in the final year. Brown is now under contract in Boston until the 2028-29 season.
Brown will be making around $52.3 million in the 2023-25 season, which will rise to an estimated $69.1 million by the final year in 2029. He will be under the most expensive contract in NBA history. However, Sam Quinn of CBS Sports believes the status of this contract may not remain the most expensive for long.
"With a new TV deal looming and revenue at an all-time high," Quinn writes, "the cap is expected to jump 10% annually for the foreseeable future. Max contracts are tied to the cap, with the highest starting salary possible for most players being 35% of the cap. Brown's teammate, Jayson Tatum, will be eligible for a similar contract next offseason that will eclipse this one."
Brown became eligible for the supermax extension after being named to the 2023 All-NBA Second Team. He averaged 26.6 PPG, 3.5 APG, and 6.9 RPG, on 49.1 FG% in the 2022-23 season, all career bests for the 26-year-old. Brown was also named an All-Star. He and teammate Jayson Tatum "combined for 56.7 points per game last season, the fourth-most by a duo since the 1976-77 merger", according to ESPN. Having helped the Celtics make the playoffs every year since being drafted in 2016, Brown is a valuable part of Boston's future, as they strive to win a championship, having added star forward Kristaps Porzingis in the offseason.
Some NBA fans remain skeptical. Brown was a reason why the Celtics could not close out Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, recording 8 turnovers and shooting only 16% in the loss, according to Sports Illustrated. Some fans believe Brown's inability to dribble efficiently with his left hand leads to this contract being an overpay.
What does that matter when you're making $60 million a year? Brown now joins Alexander Ovechkin, Patrick Mahomes, and Aaron Judge as the highest-paid players in their respective sports. Money talks. Ask Kylian Mbappe!
