Bronny James, four-star guard in the Class of 2023 and son of NBA superstar LeBron James, has announced his commitment to the USC Trojans, via his Instagram.
James is a 6 foot 3 point guard from Sierra Canyon School in California. ESPN ranked him the 19th best prospect in the Class of 2023, while he is the "No. 21 overall player and No. 5 combo guard in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2023 class", per Bleacher Report. James' game has strengths of a solid jump shot, great passing, and showing signs of explosiveness when going toward the rim. James was a McDonald's All-American, putting up 15 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the high school all-star game. James' ceiling seems to be the number 10 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
James' potential collegiate career seemed all but a sure thing. Most NBA fans are aware that LeBron James, Bronny's father, would have picked Ohio State to be his college if he had not been drafted to the NBA straight out of high school. In late January, Bronny had chosen his top 3 colleges as Ohio State, Oregon, and USC. However, the Trojans program at USC allows Bronny to stay close to home in California as well as to play for a preseason Top 25 team for the 2023-24 season. James will join guard Isaiah Collier, the number 1 prospect in the ESPN 100, at USC.
As for LeBron James, his viral dream of wanting to play in the NBA alongside his son Bronny has not waned. James will be in his 22nd season and 40 years of age when Bronny is first eligible for the NBA Draft in 2024. "I was serious," James said, as reported by ESPN. "And I'm still serious about it. Obviously, I've got to continue to keep my body and my mind fresh, I think my mind most importantly. ... But at the end of the day, I've done what I had to do in this league, and my son is going to take his journey. Just because it's my aspiration [to play together] doesn't mean it's his, and I'm absolutely OK with that."
The story of Bronny finally choosing his college is also a major stride for the James family in general. "This is an incredible thing," LeBron James stated, per ESPN. "Obviously, his dad didn't go to school. His mom didn't go to college. It's super cool. ... USC is getting a great kid. He's there to play basketball, [but] they're going to be super surprised at how great a kid he is, even though they've been recruiting him for a while."
